In Malaysia, car insurance is not optional, driving without it is an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987, with fines up to RM1,000, and you can't renew your roadtax without it. But which type should you get?
1. Third Party
The legal minimum. It covers other people, their injuries and their property, if you cause an accident. It pays nothing for your own car. Cheapest, but you carry all the risk for your own vehicle.
2. Third Party, Fire & Theft
Everything in Third Party, plus your own car is covered if it's stolen or damaged by fire. A middle ground, often chosen for older cars that are paid off but still worth protecting from total loss.
3. Comprehensive
The full package: covers the other party and your own car, accident damage, fire, theft. Most comprehensive policies also come with extras like free towing and 24-hour roadside assistance. If your car is financed, the bank almost certainly requires this.
Which one is right for you?
- New or financed car β Comprehensive, almost always.
- Older car, still valuable to you β compare Comprehensive vs Fire & Theft pricing; the gap is sometimes smaller than you'd think.
- Very old car, low value β Third Party might make sense, but check what add-ons cost first.
